Reinventing the Wheel - Literally

We hear the term “re-inventing the wheel” all of the time. It's a term used so loosely, and the phrase has all but lost its impact.

Until you consider, that Goodyear has actually gone and done it.

They have created a spherical wheel: the Goodyear Eagle-360. It looks like a big rubber ball and here’s a picture to prove it.

Of course, it's just a concept. The maglev drive they need to make the wheels rotate doesn’t actually exist yet, but it probably will soon, given the amount of money that is being thrown at it.

Airport Etiquette and Bad Process

Feb 8, 2016 5:30:00 AM / by Steve Castle

I travel quite a lot, so I have developed a set of do’s and don’ts for at the airport check-in and etiquette while on planes. I also have a pretty comprehensive list of petty annoyances, which I update regularly.

My top three check-in annoyances can include, but may not be limited to:

  1. One person with three different re-sealable bags.
  2. People who have 15 liquid items all over 100ml and no re-sealable bag, all of which are spread throughout their carry-on luggage.

So I arrive in Boston, a frequent destination of late. I do the usual – a cab to the hotel and unpack-ish. I am five hours off, so my aim is to stay awake until 9:00 p.m. local. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

Anyway, I end up in a bar – shock horror for all you travellers. They are serving a Chocolate Porter as a special and didn’t it actually taste of chocolate, so two cravings served in one friendly pint-size package.

Why Bad Software is Like a Stupid Tattoo

There is a show on TV at the moment called Tattoo Fixers. It is about people who get really bad tattoos and then decide that they need to cover them up. It’s a great show – the fixers are masters of their craft and very talented, and the individuals are apparently looking to sort out their mistakes.

So what has this got to do with bad software?

Bad software is like a bad tattoo: ill-conceived, painful, not pretty to look at, and oh, it doesn’t have the effect that it was intended to have.

The Data Management Revolution: Wouldn’t You Rather Have a Nice Cup of Tea?

Jan 18, 2016 5:30:00 AM / by Steve Castle

Somebody recently predicted that this year the asset management business would be on the verge of a data management revolution. They may well be right, but they also missed something quite fundamental – it’s not the asset management business that is powering this data management revolution, it’s their clients.
